Can I learn it all?

Family Medicine seems daunting to some medical students.  How can one possibly learn it all?  The answer is you can’t, but you can learn what you need to be an effective primary care doctor.  Your residency training will lay the foundation of knowledge.  You “practice” medicine for the remaining 30-40 years.

The saying “common things occur commonly” is true.  You will know these common things very well.

The most important things to know the red flags, know your patients well so you feel when things are not right, and be an active adult learner.  The great thing about primary care is that you will always be learning.  It may not seem like it now, but boredom is a problem for many practicing doctors.  Family Medicine allows you to continually learn new things from your patients, from your study, and from your consultants.
