Family Medicine
Resident List

Year 5
White, Chris
Bio:
Chris is currently serving as chief resident in the combined Family Medicine and Psychiatry residency program at the University of Cincinnati. He demonstrated his predilection for combined training (and vocational indecisiveness) by earning his MD/JD degree from Southern Illinois University’s dual Law and Medicine program in 2003. Some of the honors bestowed upon him during this training included graduating summa cum laude, election into Alpha Omega Alpha, and having Phi Delta Phi select him as their International (Law School) Graduate of the Year. Prior to seeing snow for the first time in Illinois, his undergraduate degree was in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Southern California where he graduated magna cum laude. Despite being a busy resident, he still finds time to root for the Trojans and whoever is playing Notre Dame and UCLA.

Hauxwell, Justin
Bio:
I grew up and lived the first 20 years of my life (if you count summers back from college) in Lame Deer, MT, a tiny town on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation. My father was a family doc in the Indian Health Service. I went to University of Kansas, Lawrence, for undergrad and to Kansas University Med Center (Kansas City) for med school. I'm an avid photographer, gardener, racquetball player, and bona fide chilihead--I LOVE hot foods! I like tinkering around in the garage building things that sometimes work. My wife is in the Speech/Language Pathology program at UC; we have two cool, cool cats and one adopted racing greyhound. Hit me up for some deep philosophical chats or some quotes from Simpson's or Family Guy!

Year 3
Machuca, Jennifer
Bio:
I'm a military brat so I grew up in Dayton, Ohio and Colorado Springs, Colorado. I went to Wright State for undergrad, Ohio State for a post-bacc, then Medical College of Ohio for med school. I choose Christ for the top hospitals we are trained at...Christ for cardiovasc and a strong inpatient, Children's, University for Emergency training, and the fact that we have a double board advantage with psych. What other program has such a breadth of strong education in so many areas? Future plans include a medium size practice with OB included and mal practice paid, lots of travel, maybe a kid or two.

Peters, Mhroos
Bio:
I Grew up in the heartland of the Middle east,—Egypt. However, I don’t speak Hieroglyphics! I went to Medical School in Cairo and didn’t have any desire to become a family doctor. In fact I always wanted to become a surgeon until I felt a calling by God to be a Medical Missionary. It came as a surprise to me. The answer to this calling was to do Family Medicine Residency at a strong program that will enable me to independently function overseas when resources and support are scarce. I am married to my beautiful wife, Mary, and we have 2 children, Josiah 4, Jeremiah 2 , and are expecting our third child in May 2008. I enjoy reading, watching sports, Apologetics, and just having fun time with the boys! My goal of course is to serve underserved people in some African or Middle Eastern country.

Trimble, Tahn
Bio:
I was born in Thailand, but grew up in central Kentucky. I went to college at the University of Kentucky earning degrees in Communications, Chemistry, and Biology. Afterwards, I continued at UK and graduated from the College of Medicine in 2005. I chose this residency program due to its commitment to working with underserved and international populations. In looking back, I feel more confident than ever that this is the right place for me. For fun, I like to play tennis, cook dinner for friends and visit with family. When I graduate, I intend to return to work in an underserved clinic in Kentucky and hopefully will continue to travel abroad and practice international medicine from time to time.

White, Jennifer Manning
Bio:
I was born in Port Huron, MI and moved to Cheboygan, MI when I was 10. I went to college and medical school at the University of Michigan (Go Blue!). Growing up in a small rural community, I learned a great deal about the value of primary care, and I chose Christ because of its strong emphasis on care of underserved populations. I also felt that the faculty and fellow residents were people that shared my values and were good role models for the kind of physician I want to become. I live with my husband and my "baby," a cat named Slinky. My hobbies include reading, gardening, knitting, playing with my cat, and I've just begun to practice yoga. I hope to stay in Cincinnati when I complete my training and work in an urban underserved clinic, possibly as part of the National Health Service Corps.

Mara has enjoyed many opportunities for international travel and enjoys international health. At the end of a long day’s work, you may find her running outdoors, spinning indoors, spending time with her family’s dogs and sharing impromptu meals with fellow residents.

Westbrook, Christine
Bio:
Originally from Michigan (University of Michigan med school/Michigan State undergrad), I packed my bags and made the long trek to the neighboring state of Ohio! I was drawn to UC/Christ because of the combined community and academic model and for the many opportunities that are available in underserved care. I also was impressed with the passion and diversity of the residents in the program. In the future, I hope to work in an urban underserved setting with involvement in public health/women's health issues. Outside interests include cooking, travel, poetry and running.

Year 1
Bender, Melissa
Bio:
I was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana and lived there until I was 11, when my family moved to a house on a small lake in Columbia City, Indiana. I went to Hanover College, which is a liberal arts school in Southeastern Indiana on the Ohio River. For medical school, I moved to central Indiana to attend Indiana University School of Medicine in Indianapolis. Having spent my whole life in the Hoosier State, I primarily focused outside of Indiana when applying to residencies. The Christ Hospital Family Medicine Residency appealed to me because the residents and faculty seemed down-to-earth, but also passionate about international health. I speak Spanish and undertook a 4th year elective in Honduras, so I thought the Shoulder-to-Shoulder program would be a good fit. After residency I would like to do something with underserved medicine and/or women's health.

Bowen, Abby
Bio:
I grew up in Columbus,OH, went to college at the University of Dayton(where I majored in Spanish and Premedicine), and medical school here in Cincinnati. My medical interests include public health, preventative medicine, pediatrics, and women's health. I'd like to practice in an inner city clinic working with the underserved and also spend a good amount of time abroad. My "for fun" interests are hiking, back-packing, traveling, Latin American culture, reading, being involved at my church, watching college football(Go Bucks!), and finding new music of varied genres. I have a dog named Mariposa Peligrosa (Spanish for dangerous butterfly), "Mari" for short, who I spoil. I have two younger sisters, one who is working on a masters in social work and the other who is a great soccer coach/player. I chose this residency for the faculty and residents whom are really quality human beings, and the many opportunities to work with the underserved while getting an excellent education.

Soliman, Peter
Bio:
I am originally from Egypt, where I attended medical school. I was always thinking about moving to the United States as I have many relatives here who are physicians, who encouraged me. I did one year of surgery at the University of Southern California, which I think was a very good experience. I like the people here in Cincinnati as they are very friendly and really care about you. Also the Christ Hospital is a wonderful hospital as it was chosen as one of the best 50 hospitals in USA. I like soccer, fixing machines, photography, and puzzles.

Warnick, Steve
Bio:
Steve grew up in Eastpointe, Michigan and went to the University of Michigan for undergrad and medical school (Go Blue!). Steve broke his promise to never live in Ohio after seeing all of the experiences that the UC/Christ Family Medicine program offered in terms of caring for underserved patients and learning about international health. He was most impressed by the amount of faculty who were passionate about caring for the medically underserved, the combined training in psychiatry, and the opportunities to interact with leaders in health policy. Steve loves to read, run, swim, watch college football, travel, and spend time with his wife Kelly and his cat Hobbes. He hopes that his Family Medicine and Psychiatry training will allow him to provide integrated care to challenging patients, advocate for patients through organized medicine and working on health policy, and work with residents and medical students on mental health and primary care issues.
