Resident List

Year 5

Udom, Lawrence

Bio: served in volunteer capacities while at Albany and in Boston and would like to ultimately work with the underserved.

Year 4

Cairns, Bryan

Bio: I am a resident in the combined Family Medicine/Psychiatry program. I graduated from OSU prior to starting my residency. My interests include transient psychiatric and primary care for the under-served, medical missions, and the interplay/integration of faith and medicine.

Year 3

Bender, Melissa

Bio: When applying to residencies, I focused on family medicine programs that have an international health component. I graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine and had lived only in the Hoosier State, so I decided to interview with programs mostly outside of Indiana. The Christ Hospital program has been a great fit for me, with the focus on International Health in all 3 years of residency and a good mix of community and university hospital experiences. Some of my other interests include women's health and Latino Health.

Bowen, Abby

Bio: I grew up in Columbus,OH, went to college at the University of Dayton(where I majored in Spanish and Premedicine), and medical school here in Cincinnati. My medical interests include public health, preventative medicine, pediatrics, and women's health. I'd like to practice in an inner city clinic working with the underserved and also spend a good amount of time abroad. My "for fun" interests are hiking, back-packing, traveling, Latin American culture, reading, being involved at my church, watching college football(Go Bucks!), and finding new music of varied genres. I also have a dog named Mariposa Peligrosa (Spanish for dangerous butterfly), "Mari" for short, who I spoil. I chose this residency for the faculty and residents whom are really quality human beings, and the many opportunities to work with the underserved while getting an excellent education.

Rich, Megan

Bio: Although I was born outside of Cincinnati in Troy, Ohio, I grew up in a small, rural town in Michigan. I attended Michigan State University (go Spartans!) and then moved to Chicago for medical school (Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine). Since graduating med school, not only have I successfully made it through 2 years of residency which allowed me to travel to Honduras and participate in the care of underserved communities, but I also got married and became a parent. To say that I am a proud mother is an understatement as it really borders more on an obsession. If you visit the program, you will no doubt be inducted into the Gwendolyn hall of fame. She has become something of a residency mascot. My other responsibilities include being chief resident. In all of my spare time, I enjoy cooking, running, and reading (anything other than medical literature!)

Toombs-Withers, Shayla

Bio: I am a proud native of Atlanta, GA. I attended undergrad at Tennessee State University in Nashville, TN, then medical school at Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, VA. I completed a traditional Osteopathic internship at The Medical Center in Columbus, GA. I was drawn to the UC family medicine program due to its focus on International Health and the underserved right here in the local community. My special interests include women’s health and adolescent medicine. After completion of residency I would like to work in a rural or underserved health clinic. Outside of medicine, I enjoy reading, playing musical instruments (guitar, sax, clarinet), traveling, and attending concerts.

Warnick, Steve

Bio: Steve grew up in Eastpointe, Michigan and went to the University of Michigan for undergrad and medical school (Go Blue!). Steve broke his promise to never live in Ohio after seeing all of the experiences that the UC/Christ Family Medicine program offered in terms of caring for underserved patients and learning about international health. He was most impressed by the amount of faculty who were passionate about caring for the medically underserved, the combined training in psychiatry, and the opportunities to interact with leaders in health policy. Steve loves to read, run, swim, watch college football, travel, and spend time with his wife Kelly and his cat Hobbes. He hopes that his Family Medicine and Psychiatry training will allow him to provide integrated care to challenging patients, advocate for patients through organized medicine and working on health policy, and work with residents and medical students on mental health and primary care issues.

Year 2

Badie, Nicole

Bio: I came to Cincinnati with a desire to work in the best Children's Hospital and found the best international family program through my journey. I served as Co-Chair for AMSA and for the Peds Club at UC. I also volunteered my time working with underserved populations while in Cincinnati, and undertook IH/missions work, and have interest in further public health training. I trained as a classical pianist and have traveled extensively which helped develop my IH/ underserved drive. I have always had an interest in international health (IH) and find the UC Family Med Program to be a one-of-a-kind experience. Scheduled rotations and faculty can both share an international focus.

Due to our work in Guam, with other IH endeavors in the Ukraine and with a current program my wife and I instituted which works with incarcerated substance abusers, I have chosen to return for further primary care training for board certification in Family Medicine.

Soliman, Peter

Bio: I am originally from Egypt, where I attended medical school. I was always thinking about moving to the United States as I have many relatives here who are physicians, who encouraged me. I did one year of surgery at the University of Southern California, which I think was a very good experience. I like the people here in Cincinnati as they are very friendly and really care about you. Also the Christ Hospital is a wonderful hospital as it was chosen as one of the best 50 hospitals in USA. I like soccer, fixing machines, photography, and puzzles.

Year 1

Buckler, Mary

Bio: Born and raised an Oregonian, I grew up in Portland and had fun getting an undergrad major in music (go Ducks!) before moving across the country for medical school. After graduating from the Medical College of Wisconsin ("M-Cow" as we affectionately call it), I took a year off before residency in order to spend a solid chunk of time working in various hospitals in Africa. In addition to my passion for medical missions, global and sustainable health care, international development, and holistic primary care, I also discovered that I share my psychiatrist-father's love for the mentally-ill (America's very-own "third-world" is many cases). When not working or sleeping I enjoy reading, running, biking, exploring, knitting-in-front-of-a-movie, non-small-talk-with-people, trying new things, and anytime-walks-with-a-friend.

Doyle, Vanessa

Bio: Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, as an only child I am fortunate to have parents who were interested in traveling, I nternational issues and the importance of giving back to communities. I have traveled and lived in many countries both for fun and volunteer projects, and these international interests led me to do my medical school training at St. George's University in the Caribbean. Coming to UC for the first time, meeting the faculty and residents and learning about the program, I knew immediately that it was the perfect program for me. I am now a resident in the dual program (Family Medicine and Psychiatry) and have no regrets! I am very interested in International Health, and the experiences that the FM progarm offers- both international and local -are second to none. I am also doing my Psychiatry residency as I love this interesting patient population and am hoping to later focus in the field of Forensic Psychiatry.
