Mission: To improve the quality of care within the patient centered medical home

Our researchers have received federal funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), as well as from foundations including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Patient Safety Foundation, and the American Academy of Family Physician’s Foundation.

Family Medicine has traditionally appealed to individuals with diverse interests in many areas and a desire to care for individuals, their families and their communities.  Family Medicine Researchers are no different, and our researchers have expertise and experience in many areas of primary care research, including spiritual coping with chronic illness, patient safety in the outpatient setting and quality of palliative care.  In 2007, we committed the research division to a new mission that encompasses all those interests and passions.

Our research, whether it be exploring the pharmacogenomics of diabetes medications in family medicine patients or barriers to timely and appropriate care of COPD patients is done within the framework of the patient centered medical home.  In designing and performing our research, we always come back to the most essential question for primary care research…How will this work improve the lives of our patients?
