Global Health Elective
General Information

The Global Health Care Elective is offered to 4th year
medical students as a Cincinnati/ outpatient course.
It is a four-week elective with two weeks of didactics at
the medical school and two weeks in country in a remote
community, participating in patient care and public health
projects. The sites, along with cost and other
information, are described below.
Registering for this elective is a three-step
process.

Didactics
This two-week required experience is held every morning 8:30-12
at The Christ Hospital. There are two field experiences held
on Monday afternoons. The rest of the afternoons are open for
independent study and reading.

Honduras

Description:
The Honduras experience is set in rural Santa Lucia,
Intibucá, at the Shoulder to Shoulder clinic. The
clinic provides 24 hour service to the residents in the area
including maternity services and inpatient care. The
clinic is an eight hour bus ride form the airport and three
hours over dirt roads from the closest hospital. Every
student will have a variety of experiences including
outpatient care in the clinic, overnight call, public
health projects and home visits.

Accommodations:
Students stay in dorm type housing near the clinic. All food
is prepared especially for the brigade team members by trained
Honduran cooks.
Cost: $1000
plus airfare (usually ranges between $500 and $800). This
includes all in country food, lodging and transportation. The
brigade fee is tax deductible.

Description:
The Tanzania experience is set in rural Shirati Region,
Rorya District, Tanzania. Participants will have a
variety of experiences, including outpatient clinic work,
mobile field clinic work and public health projects as well
as water and education projects.
Accommodations:
Students stay in dorm type housing. All food is
prepared especially for brigade team members by trained
Tanzanian cooks.

Cost:
approximately $3,400
– which includes airfare, ground transportation, room and board,
visas and safari fees for the the Maasai Mara Game Reserve.
The brigade fee is tax deductible.
